December 2007: Julian Hough

Julian Hough, an Ex-pat Brit, was a familiar face and semi-permanent fixture in Cape May from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. As one of the original “Cape May Brits”, he spent his summers and falls studying bird migration and honing his identification skills. A familiar face to many, he thinks of Cape May as his “home away from home.”

Cape May holds a special place in my heart, not just for the birds, but for the many locals that adopted us through our mid-twenties, took us under their wing and fed us!

My early influences were my friends Kevin Karlson and Arthur Morris. Their work inspired me to pick up a lens, with Kevin in particular being generous in providing me with some of his older lenses in my younger years. I currently use a Canon 20D, Canon 400mm 5.6 Lens, and 1.4x teleconverter, and a Canon Speedlite 550 EX Flash.

About Julian

Julian has been obsessed with birds since the age of six and spent his early years birding around the British Isles in the pursuit of rare birds. His passion led to extensive travel to far-flung corners of the globe that included extended periods in India, Nepal, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. His penchant for American birding was nurtured and inspired by research work as a field biologist for both Long Point and Cape May Bird Observatories.

Julian is also a talented artist with work widely-published in numerous British and American publications, including Birding and Wildbird as well as top European publications such as Birdwatching, Birding World and Birdwatch.

It was only natural that he would later embrace photography as an outlet for his creative side. Subsequently, many of his images have been published in books & magazines across Europe and North America.

His website Naturescape Images incorporates his work as a nature writer, photographer, illustrator and graphic designer. Julian currently resides in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife Sandy, their son Alex and Bella, their English Bulldog.
